Winter is Self-Care Season
Winter in the Midwest is a time of freezing cold temperatures, snow and ice that make travel challenging, blistering winds that cut right to your bones and the inevitable question of “why do I live here, again?”. So of course, once the temperature starts to drop and the holidays get nearer, a lot of people around me start to bemoan the beginning of another winter, promising to put their head down and just “get through” until April.
Over the past few years, my attitude toward winter has changed considerably. Instead of bemoaning it, I look forward to it! Yes, it’s cold, dark, and windy and we are all “stuck” inside. But winter is an important part of our yearly cycle, the time for rest and preparation. We can also use this time of year as an opportunity to spend time with someone very important to us- ourselves.
Want to change your attitude toward the winter months? Here are some things that can help!
1. Bundle up and go outside, even when it’s cold! Sunshine and fresh air are really important, so don’t go months without them. Be safe, of course, but don’t be afraid to get cold for a little while. It will make getting cozy that much better!
2. Beat boredom by having a variety of activities available. Don’t just veg out in front of the TV when you’re at home- use this time for other indoor activities like puzzles, arts, listening to music, reading, cooking/baking, journaling. Just because you’re at home, doesn’t mean there has to be “nothing to do.”
3. Allow yourself to rest. It’s natural for us to feel sleepy when it’s darker and colder outside, so instead of fighting it- lean into it! Whether it’s the children, work stress, or our own anxiety- many of us don’t sleep very well. Taking a nap or allowing ourselves to fall asleep early in the evening can be really restorative for us, and winter is a perfect time for it.
Winter doesn’t have to be a drag! It can be a beautiful and restful time of year to invest more fully into our own health, home, and relationships. I hope this upcoming winter is nourishing and rejuvenating for you!
