The Keys to Change

I believe you hold the keys to change and that each of us is capable of bringing about change in our lives if we want it.

Let me clarify- I am not meaning that I believe we can immediately change anything in our lives.  There are many situations where we, as individuals, have little or no control.  Interest rates, new policies at work, international conflicts.  They all may be things that we desperately wish were different, things we w ish we could change.

What I do mean is that we all have aspects of us that can be cultivated that help us bring about real change in ourselves- which is the building blocks for change in the world. You hold the keys to change.

There are many keys that can open many locks, but some not in the same ways as others.  Traits like compassion, non-judgement, self-awareness, and curiosity can sound like pipe dreams for those of us caught in the daily rat race of work, family, media, and consumerism.  But training ourselves in these practices can bring us to a place of peace and acceptance that allows us to see ourselves and the world more clearly.

Imagine this: your employer makes a new policy that you perceive as having a negative effect to your work- slowing you down and making you less productive. You get angry, railing about their stupidity to anyone who will listen, blaming yourself for not quitting last year when you wanted to, stuck feeling incompetent and helpless.  It ruins your day, your week, extending out until the weekend.  Maybe you drink, maybe you take it out on your partner or children, maybe you just stew silently and are unable to relax.

Maybe you’ve had this experience or something similar. I know I have.

What if instead….

…..you had the self-awareness to notice your feelings in the moment and respond in a different way?

…..you had compassion for yourself when you feel like you can’t keep up or aren’t meeting expectations?

…..you practiced non-judgement toward yourself- recognizing that everything we do in the moment is to meet our needs- including staying where we don’t want to.

…..you became curious about what is really going on underneath?

How would this situation be different for you if you could develop these qualities? Compassion, self-awareness, non-judgement, and curiosity.  These traits are the keys to change- they unlock different avenues of seeing and being that bring clarity into our lives.

I believe that we already hold these keys, we just might need some guidance on how to use them.
